Welcome from the Minister |
The Catalan Government would like to welcome you to the 2008 EuroGames Barcelona 08. We are enthusiastically promoting the 12th games with the desire to continue working for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. From here at the Department of Social Action and Citizenry, I would like to encourage you to keep up the great work you are all doing in terms of incorporating the LGBT community into an area such as sports. Because of this, the Catalan Government is promoting these games based on diversity so that optimal levels of freedom can be enjoyed by everybody from the LGBT community. In addition to laws which have represented a great step in achieving a discrimination-free society –such as the law allowing lesbians and gays to adopt, the law allowing marriage between two women or two men, or the change of name for transgender persons–, the Catalan Government is also developing pioneering policies in order achieve a freer and fairer society, such as the creation of the Programme for Gay, Lesbian and Transgender People or the approval of the Interdepartmental Plan against the Discrimination of Homosexual and Transgender People by eleven departments of the Government, or the creation of the LGBT National Council. All of this must enable social equality to become consolidated in order to guarantee the recognition of the diversity the LGBT community gives to society. Because of this, and with the willingness to cultivate mutual understanding and involvement, I would like to encourage you all to make the 2008 Eurogames a great example of social and public integration.
