More than 2,800 registrations in EuroGames Barcelona 2008 in two months. Print E-mail

The number of registrations for EuroGames Barcelona 2008 exceeded 2,800 during the first two months of registration, which consolidates the rate of registrations of the first month, when around 1,300 people signed up.

A quarter of the participants are from Germany, which at the moment is the country with the most competitors in the event. Following on is Holland, with almost 12% of the total number of registrations; Spain, with 11% and Italy with 8%. The proportion of sportsmen and women from Spain and Italy is especially appreciated by the organisation, as in previous games the percentage of these countries was much lower. This shows that bringing the EuroGames to the south of Europe enables the participation of athletes from these countries. To a lesser extent, but also notable when compared to previous editions of the games, the celebration of EuroGames in Barcelona has enabled the participation of competitors from Portugal and Andorra.

The presence of sportsmen and women from France and Great Britain, as well as those from Central Europe is also significant. Participants from Eastern European countries will total about 7% of the total competitors.

The most in demand sporting discipline is swimming, with over 650 registrations in male and female categories. Following on are volleyball, tennis and badminton. The participation of women is especially higher than men’s in football – they represent around 75% of registrations-, in basketball and in ballroom dancing. The organisation encourages the participation of women in disciplines such as beach volleyball, golf and squash to achieve 50% female participation in the EuroGames Barcelona 2008.
